The Honourable Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has officially inaugurated the Implementation Monitoring Committee tasked to oversee the Needs Assessment Fund for Nigerian public universities. The inauguration ceremony was held on Wednesday August 28, 2024 in Abuja, the Federal Capital.
In his opening remarks, according to a statement by the Director, Press & Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, the Minister emphasized the critical role of the committee in overseeing the implementation and monitoring of the Presidential Policy Assessment Fund for public tertiary institutions, with a specific focus on universities.
He explained that the committee was established following extensive consultations and agreements with university unions, aimed to support the comprehensive development of Nigerian universities. This development includes improvement in infrastructure, procurement of equipment, and the enhancement of human resources to ensure these institutions align with global standards.
The Minister revealed that an initial disbursement has been made under the Fund, marking the beginning of a substantial annual investment aimed at boosting the nation’s tertiary education sector.
The newly formed committee is entrusted with managing the disbursement and utilization of these funds, ensuring they are effectively allocated to address the most pressing needs of the universities.
Prof. Mamman observed that the delayed inauguration of the committee has impeded access to remaining funds from the Ministry of Finance, assuring that efforts are ongoing to confirm the status and availability of the outstanding funds.
Expressing confidence in the committee’s capability, the Minister stated that he believes it will fulfill its mandate and significantly contribute to the advancement of Nigerian universities.
Speaking earlier, ASUU President, Victor Emmanuel Osodeke, stressed the need to revamp Nigeria’s education system, saying proper funding would have prevented students from seeking education abroad. He called for improved oversight and resource management to restore quality education.
In a similar vein, TETFund Executive Secretary, Arch. Sonny Echonu, advocated for branch-level budget monitoring committees to enhance transparency and accountability in fund utilization. He emphasized existing disconnects and ways to strengthening internal oversight to benefit the university system.
