Lagos State indigenes living in the United Kingdom under the umbrella of Lagos State Union UK and Ireland, has asked the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu whether he can deliver the much awaited fourth Mainland bridge and Mile 2-Badagry expressway before leaving office come 2027.

The Union in a statement on Wednesday January 22, 2025 jointly signed by its President, Mr. Toyin Ibrahim Igbo and Publicity Secretary, Engr. Kayode Ajayi, emphasised the need for Governor Sanwo-Olu to deliver these two projects to write his name in gold.

The Union said they are awaiting the completion of the Fourth Mainland Bridge and Mile 2-Badagry expressway before 2027, stressing that these projects should not be used as another campaign mantra for next governorship election in the state.

The Fourth Mainland Bridge according to the Union, is a 38km-long bridge project by the Lagos State Government, connecting Lagos Island by way of Langbasa (Lekki) and Baiyeku (Ikorodu) across the Lagos Lagoon to Itamaga, in Ikorodu. The bridge is a 2 x 4 lane carriageway cross-sectional road with permission for Bus Rapid Transit Lane and future road contraction.

The Union noted that the extensive reconstruction of the Badagry expressway started in 2010, adding that despite the fact that the road is an international route that links Nigeria with other West African countries beginning with Benin Republic, it has been used by successive administration for election campaigns over the years. This the Union said should not continue in 2027.

“Although, we commend our Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the actualisation of the Red Line rail which is a 37-kilometre project running through North-South from Agbado to Marina with 13 stations at Agbado, Iju, Agege, Ikeja, Murtala Muhammed International Airport International Wing, MMIA Domestic, Oshodi, Mushin, Yaba, Ebute Metta, Iddo, Ebute Ero and Marina”, the Union said.

Concerning the state environment in general, the Union apealled to the state government to urgently address the issue of garbages and trashes being litres across the state particularly on the Orile-Badagry axis. It noted that Lagos should wear the look of a modern city like London, New York and Paris.

“We equally like to appeal to our Governor to urgently address the characters of Danfo drivers and private transport operators that are causing unnecessary nuisance on the roads particularly at bus stops and junctions. Miscreants are also springing up again across the state. These miscreants are constituting problems at bus stops, junctions, under bridges and pedestrian bridges. Lagos is a mega city and should be govern accordingly.

“Me discovered that major parts of the state are becoming embarrassing with deplorable link roads. The environment is being polluted with offensive smell oozing from some streets and places due to heaps of garbage and trashes littered everywhere. This is hazardous to health and eyesaw.

“Another problem we have on the roads is that of extortion by security agents. They are even making life worse and miserable for people. Some of us in the UK who came home in December are not happy seeing our state in that level. There are security checkpoints after every kilometre. We can do better. Our Governor should not be distracted with 2027 politics. He should remain focused on delivery the best to Lagosians”, the Union said.
