28th Convocation: LASU to graduate 8,711 students with 192 first class

The Lagos State University (LASU) will be graduating a total of 8,711 students with 192 first class at the 28th convocation ceremony this month of April 2025.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, disclosed this at a Pre-Convocation press conference to announce activities for the 28th convocation ceremonies on Thursday April 3, 2025 in Lagos.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, out of the 8,711 for first degree programmes in the university, 3,076 are graduating with second class upper division, 4,397 are graduating with second class lower division, 990 are graduating with third class, 39 are graduating with a pass and 17 are graduating with unclassified degrees during the 28th convocation ceremony.

The VC also revealed that the convocation lecture titled, “Patriots, Citizenship and National Ownership, The Imperative of Collective Responsibility for Nigeria’s Future” will be delivered by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa while National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje will serve as the Chairman of the occasion.

For Diploma Programmes, the VC said, “Out of 971 diploma students that are graduating this year, there are 123 distinctions, 550 upper credits, 287 Lower credits and 11 pass.

As for Higher Degree Programmes, she revealed, “Out of the 2,235 postgraduate students that are graduating, we have 302 Postgraduate Diplomas, 1,132 Academic Masters, 639 Professional Masters, 125 Doctor of Philosophy and 37 Professional Doctoral Degrees.

“I am delighted to announce that Nwosu Isioma Sybil of the Biochemistry Department with a CGPA of 4.93 (First Class Honours) is our best-graduating students for the 2023/2024.”

She also said, out of the 2,235 postgraduate students graduating, 302 will be graduating with Postgraduate Diplomas, 2,132 will be graduating with Academic Masters Degrees, 639 will be graduating with Professional Masters Degrees, 125 will be graduating with Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) Degrees while 37 will be graduating with Professional Doctoral Degrees.

“Besides from the 162 doctorate awardees, the University Senate will confer Honorary Doctorate degrees on two eminent Nigerians for their invaluable contributions to the development of our University and the nation at large. They are: Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and former Military Governor of Lagos State, Brigadier General Buba Maruwa Rtd. and former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Otunbab Olufemi Pedro. One of our long serving and esteemed academic, Prof. Joseph Abayomi Olagunju will be elevated to the rank of Distinguished Professor, the VC revealed.

The 28th Convocation lecture will hold on Tuesday April 8, 2025 while on Wednesday, 9th of April 2025 will have Diplomas, First Degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas and Master’s Degrees will be awarded to deserving graduands.

On Thursday, 10th of April, 2025, which is the grand finale of the ceremonies, Award of Doctorate Degrees and Conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees and confinement of Distinguished Professorship will hold.
