Lagosians living in the United Kingdom and Ireland otherwise known as Lagos State Union UK, has applauded the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu over the inauguration of the ultra-modern Akinsanya Ajaloleru Nursery and Primary School at Oke Afa, Ejigbo Local Council Development Area of the state; inauguration of Omnibus and the planned celebration of Yoruba week slated for September 2024.

In a press release on Thursday June 13, 2024, signed by its President of Lagos State Union UK, Mr. Toyin Ibrahim Igbo; General Secretary, Mr. Olanrewaju Oluwa and Publicity Secretary, Engr. Kayode Ajayi, said they are indeed happy that the Governor and his team are delivering dividends of democracy to residents of the state.

According to the release, uninterrupted democracy since the 1999 transition from military rule is majorly responsible for the successes recorded in Lagos State so far, adding that this should be replicated at the national level where every citizen of Nigeria would have a feel of the dividends of democracy.

The release said, “We applaud Governor Sanwo-Olu and every member that constituted the state civil service for their wonderful job. We applaud the State Government particularly for its commitment to invest in the future of our children. Just as the Governor said, the new school will ease the stress of long-distance trekking for children in the ward, who previously had no nearby public primary school, making access to education more convenient and stress free. It will indeed provide essential educational infrastructure that would shape the destiny of Nigeria’s future leaders irrespective of tribe, ethnicity or religion.

“We also commended our proactive and hard-working Governor for the recently inaugurated OMNIBUS, as alternative and sustainable mode of transportation to keep Lagos moving through the water. We appeal to our Governor to capture Epe, Mile 2, Apapa and Badagry in the water transportation and link them to Marina to reduce traffic on those axis with considerably low fare price.

“We want to use this opportunity to call on the attention of our Governor, that despite the successes recorded over the years, the reality in many areas showed they are yet to fully reap the benefits of democracy. We have issues such as insecurity lingering many areas of the state. We have areas in Ikorodu, Mile 12, Bariga, Badagry, Epe, Okokomaiko, Ojo, Ikotun, etc begging for state attention due to deplorable roads. We also have issues of the State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) constituting nuisance and causing unnecessary traffic jams on our roads. We equally have some officers of the Nigeria Police Force doing same as the LASTMA officials on our roads. We cannot have a modern state like Lagos and still experience these odds going on same time. We are ever ready to assist where necessary.

“The Yoruba week celebration should be a period to critically assess how the Police and officials of the LASTMA will manage congestion in the state because most of us and foreigners are coming home to experience the activation of the Yoruba cultural heritage and the assignment of a special day as Yoruba Day.

“We will join the Special Adviser to our Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Idris Aregbe, as he embark on a series of courtesy visits to various stakeholders, Yoruba leaders, grassroots communities, and the younger generation, to foster widespread participation and engagement in this cultural festivity. This indeed will be the biggest cultural event in the Yoruba calendar in years to come.

“As we celebrate 25 years of uninterrupted democracy, our leaders should be pragmatic and resilient towards ensuring that democratic governance serves in the interest of the people.”
