Since his appointment as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr has demonstrated visionary leadership, operational discipline, and a clear commitment to Nigeria’s educational advancement.

His strategic vision and execution has been instrumental in translating NELFUND’s policy blueprint into action. Under his guidance, the Fund has grown from concept to full-scale national operation within months.

Partnered with over 210 institutions across Nigeria, Mr. Sawyerr has aligned operations with the President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for education and youth empowerment.

Mr. Sawyerr’s efficient leadership is evident in the results over 690,000 student applications processed, and over N77 billion disbursed to more than 396,000 students within a year. Smooth, digital application system enabling real-time loan processing with minimal bureaucracy.

Emphasising on transparency and accountability, he has instituted systems that promote clear eligibility criteria to prevent abuse or political influence with regular public disclosures on disbursement figures and application status. Also with seamless digital tracking and reporting, enhancing public trust in the scheme.

To ensure technology-driven innovation, Mr. Sawyerr embraced digital transformation and launched a fully automated portal for applications and documentation. This enabled real-time disbursement tracking for students and institutions, as well integrated biometric and NIN verification for data integrity.

Through stakeholder engagement and public trust, Mr. Sawyerr held strategic dialogues with university administrators, student unions, and the media, providing frequent public briefings to build transparency and national support. He promoted the Fund as a non-political, purely developmental tool for youth empowerment.

With focus on impact, not just numbers and beyond statistics, Mr. Sawyerr has continued to focus on measurable impact, enabling students from low-income families to stay in school. He is supporting Nigeria’s human capital development goals, and laying the foundation for a revolving, sustainable student loan system that empowers future generations.

Under the dynamic and focused leadership of Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, NELFUND has rapidly evolved into a cornerstone of Nigeria’s education financing system. His blend of vision, efficiency, transparency, and public engagement continues to inspire confidence in the fund and optimism in Nigeria’s educational future.
