Emmanuel was just a struggling young man with dreams bigger than his pocket. Today, life has taken a surprising turn. The same girl who once mocked him for being broke is now the one begging for his hand in marriage.

Life indeed has a way of humbling people. What goes around, truly comes around. My story is one that reminds me daily that patience, hard work and faith in God always pay off.
About ten years ago, I was a struggling young man trying to find my feet. I had just graduated from school and was battling with joblessness. I did odd jobs to survive, from teaching in a small private school to helping my uncle in his small electronics shop. Life wasn’t rosy, but I was content with what I had.
During that period, I met a beautiful young lady named Nkechi. She was everything I admired in a woman, smart, fashionable and full of life. I genuinely loved her and was ready to build a future with her. But one thing stood between us, I was broke.
Nkechi was the type who valued flashy lifestyles. She wanted weekend getaways, trendy clothes and constant attention on social media. I couldn’t afford any of that. I tried my best to please her in my own little way, but she always compared me with other men who had cars, money and influence.
One day, she humiliated me publicly. She told me to my face, “You can’t even take care of yourself, how can you take care of me?” Those words cut deeply. She left me for a businessman who promised her a life of comfort. I was heartbroken, but I told myself that my time would come.
Fast forward to ten years later, I am now a successful entrepreneur. I own a small but thriving logistics company, employ several staff and live comfortably. I don’t flaunt wealth, but I thank God for how far I’ve come.
Then, out of nowhere, I received a message on social media. It was from Nkechi. At first, I ignored it, but curiosity got the better of me. She started with, “Hey, long time. I’ve missed you.” I replied politely. Days later, she poured out her heart, saying she made a huge mistake leaving me, that all the men she dated after me used and dumped her. Her last relationship had just ended badly and she was now begging for another chance, even saying she would marry me if I agreed.
It was a strange feeling. The same woman who once mocked me for being broke was now begging to share my future. Life had turned the table completely.
I didn’t insult her or remind her of her past words. I just told her calmly that the version of me she rejected no longer exists and the version of her that despised me no longer fits into my life’s plan.
This story isn’t about revenge, it’s a lesson. Never look down on someone because of their present situation. Time changes everything. The person you ignore today might be the one you desperately need tomorrow.
I have moved on, built myself and found love with someone who stood by me during my hard days. And that, to me, is true wealth.
